Late summer results at Drax Golf Club

After a hectic June, competitions were reduced in July at Drax with just the regular monthly gongs up for grabs. The outstanding performance was in the Monthly Medal Division One with Phil Skilbeck and Liam Waite both scoring nett 63. Phil took the medal with a better back 9! Mark Pearson appeared on silverware for the first time at Drax in the Second Division with Nick Hamilton continuing his good form in the Third Division. The midweek medals saw some familiar names with David Gisbourne, Ken Winter and Geoff Rankin in the prizes. The Seniors saw some new names with Brian Coaten and Richard Lyons picking up top spot in the ongoing Cup and Medal Shield rounds.

The Ladies have had a busy year, following up their Marie Curie tournament with a First Ladies Open, Mary Cresham being the star player winning both competitions. Maxine Wagstaffe also appeared in lights with a win in the Monthly Medal.

August dawned with great news of our Junior Star, Lucas Skilbeck who was runner up in the British Junior Championships at Woodhall Spa, the English Golf HQ. Lucas was grateful to the club members who have raised money to sponsor him this year.

There were 5 major tournaments in August and Jack Drakes scooped the 2 big ones with victory in the Presidents Cup and the Dennis Banks Memorial, Geoff Rankin was beaten on Countback in the Dennis Banks, both players scoring a creditable 41 points. In the John Scott Cup for Tigers (players with handicap 15 and below) Garryk Slaywe won with a solid nett 65. The Rabbit’s Barlow Cup and Station Manager’s Cup were won by club chairman Chris Burrows and Roger Norman respectively.

The Monthly Medal saw some new faces in Chris Kelly, Christian Townsend and Glynn Stroud picking up the top spots, whereas the midweek medals were cleaned up by the more familiar faces of Liam Waite, Mark Pearson and Neil Hathaway. Finally in the latest round of Senior competitions Steve Fitt returned to the winner’s circle and was joined for the first time by Geoff Othick in his first season at Drax.

As the season ends there are still the knockout trophies to conclude and the prestigious Jubilee Pairs.
