At Drax Golf Club, we know that golf is more than just a game—it's a way of life that keeps us active and connected. But as we enjoy our time on the course, it's also a perfect opportunity to think about our overall health.

This week is Know Your Numbers Week, a crucial reminder to take a moment for a quick and simple health check. High blood pressure, often called the "silent killer," affects millions of people in the UK, often without any symptoms. It's the leading cause of heart attacks, strokes, and can even increase your risk of developing dementia. The only way to find out if you're at risk is to check your blood pressure.

The Power of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

We encourage all our members to invest in a home blood pressure monitor. It’s an easy and convenient way to keep an eye on your numbers without having to leave the comfort of your home. You can find clinically validated monitors at most pharmacies and online.

To ensure you get an accurate reading, remember to:

  • Rest for five minutes beforehand.

  • Sit with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor.

  • Keep your arm supported at the same level as your heart.

  • Take two or three readings, a minute or two apart, and use the average.

If you get a high reading, don't panic! A single high reading is usually nothing to worry about. Re-test after a few minutes, and if it remains high over several days or weeks, it’s important to talk to your doctor.

Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy Heart

Did you know that playing golf is a great way to help manage your blood pressure? Regular physical activity, like a round of golf, can significantly lower your numbers. In addition to exercise, simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference:

  • Eat well: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in salt and saturated fat, is key.

  • Manage your weight: Losing even a small amount of weight can have a positive impact on your blood pressure.

  • Limit alcohol and caffeine: Reducing your intake of these can also help.

Where to Find More Information

For a comprehensive guide on choosing and using a home monitor, as well as a wealth of information on managing your blood pressure through a healthy lifestyle, we highly recommend visiting the Blood Pressure UK website.

You can also call their dedicated helpline at 020 7882 6218 for expert advice from their healthcare team.

Let's all take this week to get our numbers checked and commit to a healthier life, both on and off the golf course.
