SELBY, UK. Drax Golf Club is proud to announce a transformative milestone in its environmental journey through a landmark partnership with Humber Forest and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV). In the coming weeks, the club will begin planting over 5,000 new trees and hedgerow plants across the course, further cementing its reputation as a leader in ecological conservation within the UK golfing community.
A New Chapter in Course Ecology
This ambitious project marks a significant step forward in biodiversity, featuring a carefully considered blend of over 3,900 woodland trees and 1,400 hedgerow plants. A defining highlight of the initiative is the creation of new, vibrant hedgerows running adjacent to the 1st and 9th fairways, designed to enhance natural boundaries and provide vital wildlife corridors throughout the course.
The diverse planting palette includes:
Majestic Woodland Canopy. Over 1,800 Scots Pine, complemented by Common Oak, Silver Birch, and Common Alder.
Strategic Hedgerows. A dense, rich mix of Hawthorn, Dog Rose, Hazel, and Hornbeam.
Ecological Variety. Specialist species include Grey Willow, Rowan, and Small-leaved Lime.
To ensure the highest possible survival rates, all specimens are cell-grown and will be protected by 120cm deer tubes and timber stakes.
From 2017 to National Recognition
This venture represents the next leap forward for a vision that began at Drax in 2017. The club's long-term commitment was nationally recognised in 2022, when Drax Golf Club was named a finalist for the England Golf Sustainability Project of the Year Award, finishing in the top four for its original regeneration work.
Kevin Harrison, Chairman of Drax Golf Club, commented:
“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Humber Forest and TCV on this initiative. This isn’t simply about planting trees. It’s about building on the foundation we laid back in 2017, when we first kick-started our wider tree regeneration project. Being recognised as an England Golf Award finalist in 2022 was a proud moment for all our members, but we never intended to stop there. This new venture is the natural next step, ensuring Drax remains at the forefront of sustainable sport for years to come.”
The planting and five years of aftercare will be carried out in collaboration with TCV’s staff and volunteers, ensuring professional care during the establishment phase and the continued growth of the Humber Forest canopy within the club's grounds.
