Today, August 1st, is more than just another day on the calendar here in North Yorkshire – it’s Yorkshire Day! And at Drax Golf Club, nestled comfortably near Selby, we're bursting with pride for our incredible county. But our connection to Yorkshire runs deeper than just our postcode; it's woven into the very fabric of our club's fascinating history.

Many might not know that the story of Drax Golf Club isn't just about manicured greens and challenging fairways. It's a tale intrinsically linked with the colossal construction of the Drax Power Station. Back in the mid-1960s, as the ground-breaking work began for what would become one of the UK's largest power stations, a vast amount of industrial by-product – concrete, wood, and steel – was deposited onto a tip southwest of the station. Remarkably, this very tip would eventually transform into the verdant landscape we call our golf course today!

The construction era also fostered a strong community spirit amongst the workers. Labour camps and social clubs sprang up, laying the groundwork for camaraderie that would later flourish within the Drax Sports & Social Club in Barlow village. This club became the vibrant heart of employee activities, from inter-departmental sports to social gatherings. Crucially, it also served as the initial changing rooms, car park, and social hub for our future golf club members.

It was in the late 1970s and early 1980s that a growing passion for golf truly took root among Drax Power Station staff. What started as casual shift group games soon blossomed into the official Drax Golf Society. This innovative society allowed staff to enjoy subsidised golf outings at some of Yorkshire's most prestigious courses, including the likes of Alwoodley, Moor Allerton, Moortown, and Fulford. These events, often attracting over 30 participants, were about more than just the sport; they were about fostering connections and building friendships that would last a lifetime.

The dream of a "home course" finally materialised in 1990, when Drax Golf Club opened its doors as a charming 9-hole course. Its evolution continued, expanding to a fantastic 12-hole layout in 2010, and eventually blossoming into the full 18-hole adventure we know and love today.

Today, Drax Golf Club stands as a testament to that vision. We are a not-for-profit club, managed with a focus on providing an exceptional golfing experience at an accessible rate, without any joining fee. Situated amidst picturesque woodland, our course offers a unique blend of natural beauty and sporting challenge, renowned for its narrow fairways, diverse trees, strategically placed hazards, and those famously testing greens. And despite our proximity to the power station, a round here often brings sightings of abundant wildlife – a true tranquil escape.

So, as we celebrate Yorkshire Day, we invite you to come and experience a slice of Yorkshire's golfing heritage. Feel the warmth of our Yorkshire welcome, enjoy our meticulously maintained course, and perhaps even spot some local wildlife. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or new to the game, you'll find a challenging yet enjoyable experience rooted deep in the spirit of our proud county.

Happy Yorkshire Day, everyone! We look forward to seeing you on the greens.
